About George Mitchell Scholarship Program
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is a highly competitive national scholarship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. It’s named in honor of former US Senator George Mitchell for his significant role in the Northern Ireland peace process. The program’s main goal is to introduce and connect future American leaders with the island of Ireland. It also aims to recognize and nurture intellectual excellence, leadership skills, and a dedication to community and public service.
Every year, up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are selected for an academic year of postgraduate study in any field offered by higher education institutions in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are evaluated based on three main criteria: scholarship, leadership qualities, and a consistent commitment to community and public service.
The Mitchell Scholarship Program covers tuition fees, provides housing, and offers a stipend for living expenses and travel. The scholarship is valid for an academic year, running from September to May.

Mitchell Scholarship Application Deadline
Please ensure that all application materials are submitted through the online application by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on September 28, 2023. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to submit their application and ensure that all four letters of recommendation, as well as the endorsement (required for undergraduate students only), are submitted by the specified deadline.
If you are an undergraduate student, please be aware that your college or university may have an earlier deadline for institutional endorsements, which could be significantly earlier than the Mitchell Scholarship application deadline. To obtain these details, please contact your campus fellowship advisor before initiating the application process. Graduate students and applicants who already hold an undergraduate degree at the time of the application deadline do NOT need to submit an institutional endorsement.
Please note: If you wish to have a fellowship advisor review your application, you must send them a READ-ONLY version through the application system before submission. Once you submit your application, it cannot be undone or accessed by you or your advisor.
Completing the Mitchell Scholarship Application
You have the flexibility to save your work and return to the application later for completion. You can work on the sections in any order you prefer. We recommend saving your work periodically as web browsers may have session timeouts. In each section, utilize the “Check My Work” button to ensure you haven’t missed any required fields. Pay attention to the maximum length allowed in each field. You will have a final opportunity to review your application on the “Review and Submit” tab.
After Submitting Your Mitchell Application
Upon submission of your application, you will receive a confirmation email. Please be aware that after submission, you cannot make changes such as altering a recommender, correcting a recommender’s email address, or revising your application in any way. Some applicants choose to submit their application only after all recommendation letters have been uploaded. After submission, you can still access the application status page, where you can monitor the submission of your recommendation and endorsement letters.
Mitchell Scholarship – Video Interview
If you submit a complete application on time, you will receive an email from the Irish company Modern Hire shortly after the application deadline. This email will contain details regarding the mandatory video interview.
The video interview serves as another method for us to become acquainted with applicants. As Mitchell Scholars represent the Mitchell Scholarship, our organization, and the United States while abroad, this interview helps us gauge candidates’ ability to express themselves spontaneously. We expect candidates to uphold the integrity of this process by not sharing the interview questions with others.
To complete the video interview, you will need a stable internet connection, a quiet recording environment, and a computer or phone equipped with a camera and microphone. The interview is brief, taking less than 10 minutes. Four questions will be displayed as text on your screen. You will have 30 seconds to consider your response before providing an oral answer within the allocated time. Your responses will be recorded.
