    Here are the key points:

    Eligibility Requirements & Qualifications: NM Opportunity Scholarship

    • You must be a New Mexico resident.
    • This scholarship is for first-time degree-seeking students, meaning you don’t already have a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
    • While it’s encouraged, completing the FAFSA is not mandatory.
    • You need a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
    • The scholarship covers up to 90 credit hours for an associate’s degree and 160 credit hours for a bachelor’s degree. Non-credit programs are not eligible.

    For Recent High School Graduates:

    • You should be a full-time student but not enrolled in more than 18 credit hours for the fall and spring semesters.
    • You must have graduated from a public or accredited private New Mexico high school or received a high school equivalency credential while living in New Mexico.
    • In the 16 months after high school graduation, you can attend a public post-secondary institution without being full-time, as long as you maintain a 2.5 GPA.
    • Once you attend full-time during those 16 months, you must meet the initial semester eligibility requirements.

    For Returning College Learners:

    • You should be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours but not more than 18 credit hours in the fall or spring semester.
    • You must be 18 years or older and not qualify as a recent graduate learner.
    • You need a high school diploma or a high school equivalency credential.
    • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher at an eligible institution.

    Summer Aid:

    • Some funding may be available for qualified students taking 3 to 9 credit hours in the summer semester, but it’s limited.

    Renewal:

    • Your eligibility is reviewed each semester.
    • To renew, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, stay continuously enrolled, and meet credit hour limits based on your category (recent graduate or returning student).

    Appeal Process:

    • If you don’t meet renewal requirements due to exceptional circumstances, you can appeal. If approved, you’ll be put on probation for one semester.
    • If your appeal is denied, you’ll lose eligibility.
    • If on probation, meet the renewal criteria to reinstate the scholarship.
    • If not granted probation, you can request reinstatement after two years.

    Full Tuition & Fees are Covered Scholarship funds will cover the entire tuition and course-specific fees at New Mexico public colleges and universities.
    Part-Time & Full-Time Students Depending on the scholarship program, students must enroll either part-time or full-time.
    Career Training Certificates, Associate Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees Scholarships support students pursuing career training certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees.
    Available to Eligible New Mexico Residents Scholarships are available if you are an established New Mexico resident*, as per residency standards set by the New Mexico Higher Education Department.

    The Lottery Scholarship – Tuition-free program for recent high school graduates in New Mexico.
    – Covers 100% of tuition costs.
    – Eligible for full-time students with a 2.5 GPA.
    – Allows a 16-month grace period for students facing challenges. During this time, they can:
    – Enroll part-time (at least 6 credit hours) and receive the Opportunity Scholarship.
    – After the grace period, students should:
    – Enroll full-time (at least 12 credit hours).
    – Complete seven semesters with the Lottery Scholarship.
    – Transition back to full-time and receive the Opportunity Scholarship, even for a bachelor’s degree.
    – Exceptions to the grace period include employment, religious missions, and other special cases.
    The Opportunity Scholarship – Available for returning students, including those starting college later in life.
    – Covers tuition and specific course fees for eligible New Mexico residents.
    – Applicable to part-time and full-time students.
