About the EMA scholarship in Human Rights and Democratisation
The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA) is organized by the Global Campus of Human Rights, a global network of universities dedicated to advancing education on human rights and democracy. This program was established with the support of the European Union and involves 42 universities from EU member states, the UK, and Switzerland.
EMA is a one-year course that offers a practical and policy-focused approach to learning. It combines legal, political, historical, anthropological, and philosophical perspectives on Human Rights and Democratisation with skill-building activities and a field trip. Students receive instruction from prominent academics representing EMA’s participating universities, as well as experts and representatives from international organizations and NGOs. All of this takes place in a diverse and multicultural environment.
The curriculum is designed to prepare participants for careers in various organizations, including national, international, governmental, inter-governmental, and non-governmental organizations, as well as research institutions that deal with human rights and democratisation

Other Requirements:
- At least 2 reference letters should be provided.
- Letters of reference can be submitted by referees through a provided form or uploaded by the applicant in PDF format.
- A motivation letter must be added to your application.
- If selected, original university degree and transcripts must be provided to the EMA Secretariat.
- Applicants must complete their studies before the beginning of the new academic year (31 August 2023).
Specific Requirements for Non-EU Applicants (if applicable):
- Candidates should provide the following documents by August 31, 2023:
- Copy of degree, final transcript, and, for those graduated in the EU, diploma supplement.
- English language certificate
- Receipt of payment of the tuition fee
- Copy of passport picture page
- Copy of type-D study visa
- Declaration of Value or Cimea’s Comparability statement, if the degree was obtained in a country outside the EU.

First Semester:
- Curriculum includes Thematic Sections (TS) and Elective Modules.
Field Trip:
- Offers practical insights into human rights work (subject to approval).
Second Semester:
- Choose an area of specialization.
- Minimum of two courses required.
Thesis:
- Individual academic work (20,000 to 30,000 words).
- Supervised by EMA Director or second-semester university expert.
- Thesis defense in English.
Assessment:
- First-semester assessment: Written assignments and exams.
- Second-semester assessment: Follows hosting universities’ practices.
- Thesis assessment: Based on written work and oral defense.

The EMA Internship Programme has offered more than 200 graduates a unique opportunity to enter the job market. It serves as an excellent pathway to begin a career and has helped many former interns secure positions within the organizations where they completed their internships.
Furthermore, it has contributed to building a strong alumni network that plays a crucial role in facilitating collaboration among different institutions.
How to Apply for EMA Scholarship in Human Rights and Democratisation
The application process for the academic year 2023/2024 is now open and is ongoing.
- Deadline for non-EU and scholarship applicants:
February 13, 2023. - Deadline for EU self-funded applicants:
April 18, 2023.
The final list of admitted students will be approved by the EMA Executive Committee.
Note: Only shortlisted candidates will receive notifications, which will be sent no later than mid-July 2023.
