About John and Abigail Adams Scholarship
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship is a program that helps students with their college tuition at Massachusetts state colleges or universities. To qualify, students need to do well on the 10th-grade MCAS test. The scholarship is given to reward student achievement, attract good students to Massachusetts public colleges, and assist families paying for college.
John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Eligibility
For students graduating in 2015 or earlier:
- They must score well in either Math or English on the 10th-grade MCAS test and also do well in the other subject.
- Their combined MCAS score must be in the top 25% in their school district.
For students graduating in 2016 or later:
- They must score well in one of three high school state tests (English, Math, or STE).
- They also need to score at least proficient in the remaining two tests.
- Their combined MCAS score must be in the top 25% in their school district.
In addition, all students must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or authorized to live and work in the U.S.
- Be a full-time student at an eligible college.
- Not have a previous bachelor’s degree.
- Complete the FAFSA.
- Follow Selective Service Registration laws.
- Not have defaulted on federal or state student loans or owe refunds for previous financial aid.

Section 5: Public Colleges and Universities
Section 5 explains that there is a group of public colleges and universities in Massachusetts, called the “system.” This group has three parts:
- The University of Massachusetts includes schools like Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, and Worcester.
- The state universities include schools like Bridgewater, Fitchburg, Framingham, and others.
- The community colleges include schools like Berkshire, Bristol, Bunker Hill, and more.
The board’s job is to make sure these schools work together and help them when needed. They also tell people why these schools are important and what they’ve achieved in Massachusetts.
How Much Is It Worth?

The scholarship provides a merit-based tuition credit. At state universities and community colleges, it covers up to the resident undergraduate tuition rate. At the University of Massachusetts, the value varies: $1,714 at Amherst, $1,714 at Boston, $1,417 at Dartmouth, and $1,454 at Lowell. It can’t be combined with other tuition credits.
