About Davis Putter Scholarship Fund
The Davis Putter Scholarship Fund offers financial support to students actively engaged in social justice and progressive activism. It is aimed at those involved in movements for liberation, self-determination, and social and economic justice within their communities.
Past recipients have been involved in efforts to dismantle racial injustice, combat McCarthyism, and advocate for peace during the Vietnam War era. Present grantees focus on combating racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination, advocating for economic justice, and promoting peace through anti-imperialist solidarity.
The maximum annual scholarship amount is $15,000, valid from July 1 through June 30. The average grant awarded in 2022–2023 was $7,500. Each academic term that a recipient is enrolled in school receives a separate disbursement of the grant.
Note that grants cannot be deferred or carried over; they must be used within the year they are awarded. Students may be eligible for multiple grants. Previous recipients must reapply each year when seeking funding. History of David Putter scholarship
It was Horace Davis, Jr. aka ‘Hockey’, who founded the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund in 1961, initially named the Marian Davis Scholarship Fund in memory of Marian Davis, who died in 1960 from breast cancer.

About Horace Davis
Hockey was a steelworker and labor journalist before becoming a scholar and completing his Ph.D. thesis on the steel industry. He is a descendant of Boston abolitionists and feminists. Before refusing to testify against his friends and colleagues during the McCarthy era, he published extensively on labor history and socialist philosophy, taught at several institutions, and engaged in other activities. He and Marian started working as professors at historically Black universities in the South when they stood up to the witch hunts.
Hockey’s greatest love was The Fund. Hockey gathered his kids, and his friends Sara Gordon, Robert and Jane Hodes, Jessie Lloyd O’Connor, Leonard Radinsky, Dirk Struik, Ann, and Katherine Timpson, and other old friends the year following Marian’s passing. They established a board, raised money, and attracted students. Hockey kept everyone in touch for nearly 40 years, and the Fund kept thriving and expanding.

About Norton Putter
Norton S. Putter was one of the individuals he brought to the Fund and who generously donated his time and money. Norton was born in Poland, but his family fled there to avoid the country’s anti-Semitic persecution and poverty. Norton devoted his whole life to the pursuit of justice in the United States, focusing especially on the civil rights struggle. He participated in the 1948 Henry Wallace presidential campaign, backed the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and was a lifelong NAACP member. He was a mainstay in Syracuse, New York’s progressive politics, advocated for peace and justice, and was essential to the Fund’s operations up until his passing in February 2000.

Funds’ achievement
At the age of 100, Hockey passed away in his sleep in 1999. The Fund honors his life as well as the lives of Marian Davis and Norton Putter. The Fund has given out well over 1,500 scholarships to students since that initial meeting in 1961 who best exemplifies the spirit and dedication Marian, Hockey, and Norton brought to the struggle for peace and justice.
Eligibility criteria for Davis Putter Scholarship Program
The eligibility criteria for availing of the Davis Putter Scholarship are three-fold Students must meet all three factors to apply for the scholarship.
- You are/will be enrolled in a college, university, or trade/technical school for a degree or certificate program
- You must have participated in campaigns and movements working for progressive social change. The resistance against capitalism, racism, white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, gender-based violence, environmental exploitation, and/or other systemic injustice and oppression is a defining feature of this work.
- You have financial needs and limited or no access to family wealth. The Davis Putter Scholarship prioritizes those who are not economically privileged.
