About the  Mesothelioma scholarship – History

The Mesothelioma.com Scholarship is for students who’ve faced cancer, not just mesothelioma. It started in 2015 to support students affected by cancer, inspired by Heather Von St. James, a mesothelioma survivor, and her husband Cameron. They went to college after Heather’s diagnosis.

The scholarship gives $4,000 yearly to a student impacted by cancer, aiming to help with their education expenses.

Mesothelioma.com wants to hear the stories of those who have fought cancer or have close loved ones who did.

Heather Von St. James, who survived pleural mesothelioma, shared:

“When I got sick, everything changed. I had to stop working at my salon. Cameron, my husband, decided to go back to school to make things better for our family, especially with our new baby.

We really believe in learning more, even though it’s hard to manage family, work, and school, especially with me being sick. It’s tough, but it’s worth it. I hope this scholarship can help someone going through a tough time.”

Mesothelioma Scholarship Application Requirements:

To be considered for the Mesothelioma.com Scholarship, follow these four steps when applying:

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility:

Anyone affected by any type of cancer, not just mesothelioma, can apply. You must also:

• Be a full-time student at a two-year or four-year university, community college, junior college, or graduate program in the U.S.
• Be a U.S. citizen.
• Maintain a good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.2.

If you meet these requirements, you can apply for the scholarship.

Step 2: Share Your Cancer Experience

Write an essay (500 – 1,000 words) or create a 4 – 5 minute video answering these questions:

• How has cancer impacted your life and goals?
• How did facing this challenge shape who you are today?
• What would winning this scholarship mean to you and why is it important?

Include a header in the top left corner of the essay or in the video description with:

Format

• Student Name
• Date of Submission
• Details of Cancer You Encountered
• Field You Wish to Study

Step 3: Collect Additional Documents

Along with your essay, submit the following:

• Unofficial academic transcript: Shows your GPA.
• Proof of enrollment: Confirming your enrollment in a qualifying program.
• One letter of recommendation (LOR): Explain why you’re the ideal candidate for the scholarship. You can submit this directly on our portal or have your recommender email it to scholarships@mesothelioma.com.
• Honors & volunteer work (optional): List any awards or volunteer experiences in one document.

Step 4: Organize and Submit Your Application Using the Form

Submit your application through the form on the page. All documents should be in PDF format with the following names:

Mesothelioma.com Scholarship Application Process

For the Fall 2024 Mesothelioma.com Scholarship, please follow these steps:

1. Submission Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on March 31, 2024.
2. Review Process: After the deadline, the Mesothelioma.com staff will review all entries. The winner will be selected based on:
   • Commitment to academic excellence
   • Financial need
   • Positive impact on those around them
   • Quality of submitted materials
   • Strength in facing adversity
3. Notification: The student receiving the $4,000 scholarship will be notified no later than May 1, 2024. The funds will be sent to the student’s school for the Fall 2024 semester. The winner will also be announced on Mesothelioma.com’s social network with over 50,000 followers. Mesothelioma.com will only contact the scholarship winner.

Important Note: Falsifying claims in an applicant’s story will lead to immediate disqualification.
