Federal Financial Aid

• The Federal government offers a variety of grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and loans for eligible students. To determine eligibility for federal and most campus-based financial aid programs, all UH campuses use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from the U.S. Department of Education.
• These programs are administered by the financial aid office at each individual UH campus. For details about fund availability, eligibility, deadlines, and required forms, reach out to the financial aid office of the campus you plan to attend.

Federal Scholarships and Grants

• For more information about federal opportunities, visit the Federal Student Aid website. These include the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant, and Federal Work-Study Program.
• Under the Federal Work-Study Program, you can work part-time to earn money for your education. It’s available to undergraduate and graduate students, whether you’re full-time or part-time. UH System Common Scholarship Application Requirements

This section provides information about the UH System Common Scholarship Application. A significant portion of the scholarships accessible through this application is funded by generous UH Foundation donors. Additionally, some smaller system and campus scholarships also use this application. We encourage students to apply annually.

University of Hawaii Scholarships Application Requirements

The UH System Common Scholarship Application typically consists of the following components:

1. Personal Statement: You must submit a personal statement as part of the UH System Common Scholarship Application. Consider completing this statement in a separate document so that you can save it, copy it, and use it for other scholarship applications if needed. Your personal statement should address:
   • Why you believe you deserve a scholarship.
   • How scholarships have impacted or will impact your education.
   • Your educational and career goals.
   • Any notable accomplishments, honors, or awards.
   • Your current employment.
   • Your personal background, including special life situations or information you want the Scholarship Committee to consider (e.g., returning to school later in life, balancing education with parenting, etc.).
   • Any barriers you’ve faced in pursuing your educational goals and how you plan to overcome them (e.g., socio-economic or educational disadvantages).
2. Optional Service Activities Essay: While not mandatory, we strongly encourage you to complete this essay as it is considered for many scholarships. You can describe:
   • Formal and/or informal service activities, volunteer work, or projects.
   • Significant home or family responsibilities (e.g., providing financial support, caregiving, family business involvement).
   • Any activities that demonstrate your commitment to giving back to your community. Specify if these activities were paid or unpaid and if they were part of your coursework.
3. Optional Campus-Specific Essays: The Common Scholarship application includes optional essay questions that may pertain to specific campuses or fields of study. It’s recommended to complete those that apply to you for maximum scholarship consideration. These essays do not replace your personal statement.
4. Letters of Recommendation (LORs): Some scholarships require one or more LORs. You can list up to three recommenders on the Letter of Recommendation form in the Scholarship Manager site. Inform your recommenders of the deadline and request their permission to use them. Letters from relatives or friends are not accepted, and all LORs must be submitted online.
5. Transcripts: Uploading your high school or previous non-UH college transcript(s) is highly recommended for many scholarships. Transcripts can be unofficial but must clearly display your name, grades, GPA, and date printed.
6. FAFSA Completion: Students applying for UH System Scholarships are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1st to demonstrate financial need.

• March 1, 2023, at 4:00 pm (HST): Submit the UH System Common Scholarship Application through Scholarship Manager.
• March 1, 2023, at 4:00 pm (HST): Deadline for uploading your high school/college transcript(s) through Scholarship Manager.
• March 8, 2023, at 4:00 pm (HST): Letters of Recommendation must be completed/submitted through Scholarship Manager.

How To Apply for University of Hawaii Scholarship Application 

You can use the UH System Common Scholarship Application to apply for multiple scholarships within the University of Hawaiʻi system all at once. This application covers the following:

1. UH System Scholarships (Administered by the UH System Financial Aid Office).
2. Campus-specific scholarships (Excluding UH Mānoa scholarships managed by departments or the UH Mānoa Financial Aid Office).
3. UH Community Colleges Scholarships (Offered through the Office of the Vice President for Community Colleges).
4. UH Mānoa New Warrior Scholarships & Presidential Scholarships (e.g., Provost Achievement, Regents, Mānoa Excellence, and Mānoa International Excellence Scholarships).

The UH System Common Scholarship Application serves as the primary application for all UH campuses (except UH Mānoa, which uses multiple applications). Many of the scholarships available through this application are funded by the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation, which awards approximately $5 million annually from private and corporate donations.

Each UH campus has a substantial pool of funds for student financial awards. To ensure fairness and comply with scholarship donor preferences and legal requirements, we employ a common scholarship application platform that manages scholarships using a pool and match method. Most awards are granted based on objective criteria like merit and financial need. In rare instances where funding has specific restrictions (e.g., gender), the university will honor these restrictions within the limits of the law. This approach using a common scholarship application system guarantees that scholarship decisions are free from bias based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, or gender.
