Applications are now being welcomed for the 2023 National Honor Society Scholarship Program, proudly presented by NASSP, the parent organization of the National Honor Society. Eligibility for NASSP Scholarship
To qualify for the NHS scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
- Be a high school senior set to graduate during the current academic year.
- Maintain active membership in good standing with their local National Honor Society chapter, adhering to all chapter membership requirements and responsibilities.
- Possess an NHS student account, which is confirmed by the NHS chapter adviser.
- Have intentions to pursue a degree at an accredited college or university in the United States.

For over seven decades, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) has been honoring exceptional NHS seniors with scholarships, totaling more than $23 million in awards. In this current year, we are proud to grant $2 million in scholarships to 600 students. Each year, scholarship recipients are chosen for their embodiment of the four foundational pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Here’s how to apply for NHS scholarship program in three simple steps:
Step 1: Visit the official website
Step 2: Get Verified:
- What does it means to get verified? Once a student registers on the NHS website, a notification is sent to their adviser for verification of their active NHS membership. Once verified, the student gains access to the NHS Scholarship application. Unverified students cannot access the application.
- Tip: Share your school ID # with students for easy registration. Find your School ID in your profile after logging in and viewing “My Institutions.”
- Good Standing:
- “NHS seniors in good standing” are current graduating class members who fulfill their NHS chapter obligations, including GPA, service activities, and meeting the chapter’s character and leadership expectations. Refer to your NHS chapter’s bylaws for “good standing” details, and confirm with your NHS advisers.
- Ideal Candidate:
- An ideal NHS Scholarship applicant will:
- Demonstrate a service mindset by helping others proactively.
Commit to learning, growth, and educational opportunities.
Take leadership responsibility in school and community.

- Display perseverance, honesty, integrity, and ethical decision-making.
- Application Requirements:
- During the application process, applicants will need to:
- Provide detailed information about their scholarship, service, leadership, and character-related activities and experiences.
- Request an Adviser Certification from their NHS Adviser, confirming good standing with the local NHS chapter.
- Request a Recommendation from a non-adviser, non-family member adult who can speak to their commitment to NHS pillars.
- Recipient Announcement:
- Scholarship recipients and advisers will receive notification in March via email. Recipients must complete a Scholarship Acceptance Form to receive the scholarship. Unsuccessful applicants will also be notified by email.
- Award Amounts:
- 575 National Semifinalists will receive $3,200 each.
- 24 National Finalists will receive $5,625 and an all-expense-paid trip to DC for Trailblazing Leadership Week.
- 1 National Finalist will receive $25,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to DC for Trailblazing Leadership Week.
- Award Payments:
- Scholarship checks are sent to recipients’ colleges/universities, not to individuals. They are made payable to the designated institution in late July/early August.
- Renewability:
- The NHS Scholarship is a one-time award for undergraduate educational expenses.
- Usage of Funds:
- Funds can be used at U.S. colleges/universities, military institutes, or trade schools for qualified undergraduate education expenses. This includes tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment.
