Governors State University in Chicago’s Southland region, GSU Foundations sponsors the Virginia M. Pizza Endowed Scholarship for Geriatric Care.

The Governors State University (GSU) Foundation offers the opportunity to apply for a scholarship with an open date of February 12, 2024, and a deadline of March 15, 2024. This scholarship doesn’t allow for renewals, but it provides an award of $1,250. We welcome eligible and qualified candidates to apply for the Virginia M. Pizza Endowed Scholarship in Geriatric Care. About the Virginia Pizza Scholarship in Geriatric Care

The Virginia Pizza Scholarship for Geriatric Care is established in honor of Virginia Pizza, whose son, Donald, served as the president of the GSU Foundation from 1985 to 1990. This scholarship aims to encourage interest among GSU students in careers related to geriatric care. It provides support to students pursuing such careers and recognizes outstanding academic performance.

Virginia Pizza Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for this scholarship, you should meet the following criteria:

• Be a degree-seeking student in the College of Health and Human Services (chhs).
• Major in a health profession related to geriatric care.
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25, either from GSU or your prior university.
• Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours for undergraduates or 9 credit hours for graduate students for the upcoming semester.
• Must be an Illinois resident and a United States citizen.

Documentation Required:

To apply for this scholarship, you will need to provide the following:

1. A biographical essay explaining how your chosen major connects to your intention to work with the elderly in your future career. If you currently work with older adults, describe how your major/degree choice will enhance your work. Be sure to discuss your commitment to this field, how the scholarship will support your educational goals, and how it will empower you to achieve your career aspirations.
2. Two letters of recommendation from deans or division chairs who can confirm your eligibility for a major associated with geriatric care. These majors may include nursing, speech pathology, occupational/physical therapy, social work, allied health, and psychology. The recommendation letters should also attest to your character and dedication to working with older individuals.
