WAEC General Mathematics Paper 2, WASSCE (SC).

Question  No 1:

a) Mr. Sarfo borrowed $25,000.00 from AFIAK Financial Services at a 21% simple interest per annum for 3 years. If he was able to pay back the loan in 2 years at equal yearly installments, determine the amount he paid each year.

b) Two consecutive numbers are such that the sum of thrice the smaller and twice the larger is 17. Find, correct to three significant figures, the smaller number as a percentage of the sum of the two numbers.

Observation

The Chief Examiner reported that in part (a), a good number of candidates tackled it successfully. However, some candidates struggled to understand the requirement of the question. In part (b), the majority of candidates that attempted it got the correct answer, but some failed to write the final answer in three significant figures.

Part (a) Solution:

Candidates were expected to:

  1. Find the simple interest using the formula: Interest = Principal * Rate * Time.
    • Interest = $25,000.00 * 21% * 3 = $15,750.00.
  2. Add the principal to the simple interest to get the total repayment.
    • Total Repayment = $25,000.00 + $15,750.00 = $40,750.00.
  3. Divide the total repayment by the number of years to get the yearly installment.
    • Yearly Installment = $40,750.00 / 2 = $20,375.00.

Part (b) Solution:

Candidates were expected to:

  1. Let the consecutive numbers be and (+1).
  2. Form an equation using the given information: 3+2(+1)=17.
  3. Solve the equation to find :
    • Expanding gives 3+2+2=17.
    • Combining like terms results in 5=15.
    • Solving gives =3.
  4. Determine the sum of the numbers:
    • Sum = 3+4=7.
  5. Find the smaller number as a percentage of the sum of the two numbers:
    • \text{%} = \frac{3}{7} \times 100 \approx 42.857\% \approx 42.9\% (to 3 significant figures).

Question No 2:

A man left town M at 10:00 a.m. and traveled by car to town N at an average speed of 72 km/h. After spending 2 hours for a meeting, he returned to town M by bus at an average speed of 40 km/h. The distance covered by the bus was 2 km longer than that of the car, and he arrived at town M at 1:55 p.m. Calculate the distance from M to N.

Observation

The Chief Examiner reported that the majority of the candidates attempted this question successfully. Candidates generally demonstrated an understanding of the relationship between speed, distance, and time. They correctly calculated the time spent traveling as 3 hours 55 minutes – 2 hours, resulting in 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Question No 3:

The points X, Y, and Z are located such that Y is 15 km south of X, and Z is 20 km from X on a bearing of 270. Calculate, correct to:

a) Two significant figures, ∣∣;

b) The nearest degree, the bearing of Y from Z.

Observation

The Chief Examiner reported that this question was unpopular among candidates. In part (a), a good percentage of candidates that attempted it could not apply the Pythagorean theorem where necessary. In part (b), some candidates were able to apply the trigonometry ratio correctly. However, a good number of them could not get the trigonometry ratio correctly.

Part (a) Solution:

Candidates were expected to:

  1. Draw and label a diagram as shown.
  1. Apply the Pythagorean theorem to find ∣∣.

Part (b) Solution:

Candidates were expected to:

  1. Use trigonometry ratios to find the bearing of Y from Z.

Question 4

a) Candidates were expected to find the respective child’s angle and draw a pie chart based on the given data.

b) Candidates were expected to assign values to as the number of students that studied both subjects and draw a Venn diagram accordingly.

Observations

The Chief Examiner reported that this question was unpopular among the candidates, and the majority who attempted it had difficulty interpreting the question.

Part (a) Solution: Pie Chart

Candidates were expected to:

  1. Find the respective child’s angle based on the percentage share.
  2. Draw a pie chart as shown.

Observations

The Chief Examiner reported that the majority of candidates who attempted this question did not plot the points after completing the table of values, and many completed the table with wrong values for .

Part (b) Solution: Venn Diagram

In part (a) (i), candidates were expected to:

  1. Assign as the number of students that studied both subjects.
  2. Draw the Venn diagram as shown:
