About Western Golf Association

The Western Golf Association (WGA) runs golf tournaments for both pros and regular players. They really value caddies and help them out through the Evans Scholars Foundation. This foundation gives full college scholarships to hardworking caddies who may be facing money challenges.

The WGA is a big deal in the world of golf. Many people support them, and they are a well-respected charity. They are also leaders in the national golf community.

Western Golf Association (WGA)

The WGA was founded in 1899 by 11 golf clubs in the Chicago area to advance their interests in the sport. Its headquarters were established in Golf, Illinois. The WGA initiated its first Western Open and Western Amateur championships at the nearby Glen View Club to showcase the exceptional talents of golfers from the western region.

Today, we oversee four amateur championships: the Western Amateur, Western Junior, Women’s Western Amateur, and Women’s Western Junior. Additionally, we host two professional events: the Korn Ferry Tour’s NV5 Invitational presented by Old National Bank and the BMW Championship, which is the second-to-last event in the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs.

Evans Scholars Foundation

In 1929, the renowned amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. requested that the WGA manage the fund he had established to send deserving caddies to college. The WGA awarded its first two scholarships in 1930, enabling caddies Harold Fink and Jim McGinnis to attend Northwestern University. Until World War II, all Evans Scholars continued their education at Northwestern, and it was there that the first Scholarship House was established.

As the Evans Scholars Foundation expanded, WGA Directors recognized the positive impact of Chick’s vision on the lives of young men and women with limited access to a college education. When Chick’s original funds were depleted, WGA Directors sustained the Evans Scholars Program by making their own contributions.

Today, the Foundation is funded by contributions from Par Club members across the country, as well as proceeds from our tournaments. The Evans Scholars Program provides academic, professional, and social support that helps students maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 and achieve a 95 percent graduation rate. For the 2022-23 academic year, there is a record-breaking 1,100 Evans Scholars enrolled in 22 leading universities, and a total of 11,815 young men and women have graduated as Evans Scholars since 1930.

Eligibility Criteria for Evans Scholarship Application

1. Strong Caddie Record: Applicants need to have caddied successfully for at least two years and should intend to continue caddying at their sponsoring club during the application year.
2. Excellent Academics: Candidates must have maintained a B average or higher in college preparatory courses by the end of their junior year in high school. Note that for 2023 applicants, the ACT and SAT are optional.
3. Demonstrated Financial Need: Applicants must show a clear need for financial assistance.
4. Outstanding Character: Candidates should display exceptional character, integrity, and leadership qualities.

 

Application Timeline

• August 1: The online application becomes available. Please review the website for more information.
• October 1: The CSS Financial Aid Profile becomes available. Complete the CSS Profile online and submit it to CSS along with the required fee as soon as possible. The Evans Scholars Foundation CSS code is 0153.
• October 15: All applications, including supporting documents (completed CSS Profile, High School Evaluation, Caddie Evaluation, letters of recommendation, high school transcript, and test scores), should be completed.
• December: Due to updates and changes to the FAFSA, it won’t be available until December 2023. Therefore, submit a copy of your completed 2024-25 FAFSA Submission Summary with the Student Aid Index (SAI) on or before January 15.
• April 1: All application decisions will be finalized

Which Universities Can You Attend?

Living in an Evans Scholars House on campus is a crucial part of the Evans Scholars Program. Applicants should apply to the specific Evans Scholars universities designated for their state. For example, Illinois residents should apply to the University of Illinois in Champaign, the University of Illinois in Chicago, and other relevant Evans Scholar universities. Applicants need to submit their applications for admission directly to the universities. We suggest applying through early action or regular decision processes.

How to Apply for Evans Scholarship program

The Evans Scholarship offers full tuition and housing to high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. To qualify, caddies must meet specific requirements, including a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need, and outstanding character.

Scholarship applications are accepted during the applicant’s senior year of high school and from college freshmen.

The complete application, along with supporting documents like evaluations, recommendation letters, transcripts, test scores, and a CSS profile, must be finished by October 15. Since the FAFSA won’t be available until December 2023, the deadline to submit the FAFSA Submission Summary to the Scholarship Committee is on or before January 15. The Scholarship Committee will begin its review after October 15 and will interview finalists before making the final selection. All decisions will be made by April 1.
